John Patterson

Chaplain, Round Rock Fire Department

His role at the Round Rock Fire Department reflects the care, trust, and humanity at the center of the organization. He is the heart of the Round Rock Fire Department.

John Patterson has served the Round Rock Fire Department as Fire Chaplain since 2019, offering consistent spiritual leadership, care, and support to firefighters and their families. He also serves as Community Life Pastor at Cityview Bible Church in Round Rock, a role he assumed in 2024. Previously, John served as Executive Pastor at First Baptist Church in Elgin and as Family Life Pastor at Grace Covenant Church in Austin.

John’s journey into ministry is grounded in both service and discipline. He began his career in the United States Navy as an Aviation Fire Control Technician Third Class, an experience that shaped his understanding of teamwork, responsibility, and calm leadership under pressure. He later worked as a Failure Analysis Engineer with L3 Communications and Intel Corporation. In 2004, John accepted a calling to vocational ministry, bringing together analytical rigor and pastoral wisdom in a way that uniquely equips him for chaplaincy.

John and his wife, Dawn, have been married since 2006 and together have raised four adult children. They are now enjoying life as grandparents. In 2012, John and Dawn adopted their son, Joseph, from Uganda and spent a decade serving together in international church and family preservation ministry. Their shared life of service also includes extensive work in marriage ministry, walking alongside couples through seasons of strain, restoration, and renewal.

John’s connection to the fire service is deeply personal. His son serves as a firefighter with the McKinney Fire Department, and John maintains close relationships with many members of the Round Rock Fire Department. He is passionate about ensuring that firefighters are supported as whole people, spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and physically, throughout their careers. John believes deeply that with faith-centered care and intentional support, firefighters can finish their careers stronger, healthier, and more connected than when they began.

John is honored to serve on the Board of the Round Rock Fire Foundation and is dedicated to strengthening and expanding the Foundation’s wellness initiatives. His vision includes thoughtful programs, mentoring, ministry partnerships, and the responsible use of technology to ensure firefighters and their families are supported with compassion, consistency, and respect.
